Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse, so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. While DuVernay grew up within Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of a member of jury. Due to her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
